Craft and Business of Writing Children's Picture Books
This class is a gem…. Breaking down the mystery of crafting magic for children, it provides a systematic explanation of the nuts and bolts behind page-turning, life-changing pb’s! From the highly informative weekly webinars to daily online lessons covering topics like “developing memorable characters,” or “writing killer hooks,” and interviews with authors, editors, and agents – the course offered me a whirlwind of information and inspiration. ~ a heartfelt thanks. ~Anna Borenstein
The Craft and Business of Writing Children's Picture Books Course is fabulous. Before I took it, I didn't know how to write a children's book at all. I had always wanted to. I knew there was a certain art to it, but I never knew that successful children's book stories had certain structures to them. This course has all kinds of eye-opening information about how to write a children's book, often in the form of videos and webinars (which often includes other children's book writers), and I would highly recommend it to anyone.
Thank you so much ~ Rosalind Lord

I am extremely grateful to be in this course…. I like the examples, videos etc. The facebook critiques have been so helpful to me so far. The best part is that I am learning without the pressure to get it done yesterday. Mira and her team bring great knowledge and expertise. I appreciate that we get to listen to experts. ~ thank you! ~ Eucabeth
The Craft and Business of Writing Children's Books hosted by… the Children's Book Academy is one of the loveliest and most intimate writing intensives I’ve ever been a part of…From day one of the workshop, you’ll come away with a new respect for picture books and the writers and illustrators who bring them to life. There are weekly webinars, detailed daily blog posts, frequent Facebook messages, online pitch sessions…you name it, this course has it! The teacehrs are as funny and down-to-earth as they are professional. They are also extremely generous toward aspiring writers, going out of their way to nourish and encourage. Even with several educational books and a picture book (2015) under my belt, [they] showed me just how much there is to learn about picture books….Next stop: Chapter Books! ~ Rita Lorraine Hubbard
Taking The Craft and Business of Writing Children’s Picture Books through the Children’s Book Academy was the best step I could’ve taken at this point in my career and it certainly isn’t the last. I cannot honestly say enough about….The Children's Book Academy. My one regret is that I did not discover it sooner and spent so much time taking other classes and not really learning what is important to know about picture book writing. It is totally amazing what you learn in the five short weeks that this class meets. The material is fantastic, the teaching is supreme, and the atmosphere of the webinars and emails are homey and comfortable….The teachers did such a wonderful job of explaining concepts and critiquing our work, that I for one, couldn't get enough...I just looked forward to every lesson….In fact, I loved the course so much that I have signed up for the Chapter Book course. ~ Sandee Abern
In my pursuit of writing the 'perfect' book I often could not see the forest for the trees. I was unable to focus on the important aspects of putting the story together in a professional way. This class taught me to do just that. The weeks are broken down in to topics and taught in a precise fashion…. Each lesson was informative without being overwhelming. The critique and the webinars were extremely informative and helpful. The setting entertaining and supportive…. The inter-acting between the participants was respectful, informative and fun! I highly recommend this course to anyone seriously wanting to write picture books for children. ~ Sally Suehler
One of the things that made this class so wonderful was the Facebook critique groups. I was paired with a diverse group of people who were all working on interesting projects and willing to help each other out …. Mira Reisberg has such a gentle way of giving you a straight up critique that you feel challenged and nurtured at the same time. I'm exiting this 5-week whirlwind with 2 picture book manuscripts, an overhauled website, and a renewed commitment to getting my own stories into dummy format and getting them out there in the world. Wow! ~ Jeanette Bradley
The teachers were amazing. They all took the time to go over our work in the weekly class webinars…. [and] the information that they [gave[ was invaluable. Mira and company really know their stuff and that experience and EXTRA care makes this class exceptional…. [W]e all had smaller critique groups that we worked in while learning…our craft. There were daily lessons jam packed with videos and examples…. a private FB page where we were able to discuss things, share, post questions and get answers …. I have taken a few online classes and this is one of the only ones that really felt like a real class. The class was so good that I am taking the Chapter book class next and I can't wait. I feel like I am part of a new family. Thank you Mira and company! ~ Stephanie Olivieri

Taking this class has been equal to going to 20 or more SCBWI events. I had no idea I would learn so much. I can't even imagine what wasn't covered. I am signed up for the chapter book class and can't wait to get started. ~ Wendy B. Martin
The best money I've ever spent!!! Before taking the Craft and Business of Writing Children's Picture Books Course, I was a total novice in children's picture book writing and illustrating. I always dreamed of writing and illustrating picture books but I honestly didn't think it was possible. Then I found the Children's Book Academy. This course taught me so many amazing things, about myself and about my writing skills. So many things, I couldn't begin to list them all here. I'm still a novice but now I have an amazing level of confidence that I never knew existed inside myself. This course has definitely changed my life, forever! I can't wait to share with the world my very first published picture book. Thank you Children's Book Academy! ~ Lisa Ann Payne www.lisaloveskidsbooks.com

I feel that the most valuable trait a teacher can have is passion for their subject matter. And Mira has this in spades. The thoughtful, inspired and (not to mention) ambitious way she constructed this course is truly beyond the pail. The interviews, the research, and the analysis in her daily uploads became a wonderful part of my daily routine, something I enjoyed with my morning coffee. And what a beautiful way to start your day. Mira is absolutely attentive and engaged. Her response to posts is immediate, and of course, her posts of encouragement are just so sweet and heart warming! It was also wonderful to converse with other like-minded people from around the country, and to be involved with their projects. This is a magnificent course.
~ Elsa Murray-Lafrenz (art teacher and aspiring picture book writer in San Francisco)
Mira this course is a wonderful gift that any aspiring picture book writer should definitely give to themselves. I learned so much and now I have a manuscript and query letter ready to submit.... I recommend this course to anyone interested in writing a children's book. Thank you so much for your wisdom and guidance! ~ Danielle Heitmuller, animator
I just finished viewing and reading today's final post and didn't want to wait a moment longer to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the fruitful experience [and] all the information I've been enriched with.... I feel like I've already made progress that I'm truly excited about! And that, my dear, is thanks to all the time, energy and treasure you have poured into this course. Many thanks, Mira!! ~ Patrice Fink
Mira, you are a genius! To take my version and craft it into a something that could be published is NOTHING SHORT OF GENIUS! ~ Jeanette Koscheski (teacher)
Mira is very warm, effusive, and giving, which I was drawn to right away. Her writing class is the same way. She gives so much in her lessons, both in writing and in her videos. The examples she gives, the books she deconstructs, the "buffet" style of her classes really has helped me learn where to go with my own work. I especially loved her lesson on "luscious language" and find my stories becoming more alive. Thanks Mira!
~ Tia Mushka, illustrator
You have done a magnificent job! The pages on agents, editors, contracts, and social media are brilliant. This class is the most for the money I can imagine. Your hard work has paid off for all your students. Your online classes set a high bar for anyone to follow, meaning they become the gold standard and you the gold medal winner. It is such a pleasure to see your grand success. ~ Jill Littlewood
Craft and Business of Illustrating Children's Picture Books
You have given me such confidence and have helped drive me forward. Thank you is not enough. You are an inspiring individual and people like you are hard to come by in this day and age. No matter where this goes, you have made a change in my life. ~ Charlotte Dixon
I have taken several of your courses Mira and have loved each one – not only have I enjoyed them, but I have learned so much from your dedication to sharing your knowledge with others. The material you put together is very professional and exciting. How does someone thank you for that! You are a dear and special person and I want to thank you. With heartfelt appreciation. ~Dr. Helena DeLuca
Though I have been writing and illustrating for decades, and I have many published books to my name, in the last few years I've fallen out of the loop and was feeling discouraged and unmotivated. I took this course in an effort to stoke the flames again, to be inspired and challenged by deadlines and new ideas. Though it is early in the course, already I have been inspired every day by Mira and all the contributors to the course, and I've been encouraged by my fellow students who have so much to share. In the end, we all are responsible for our own effort in whatever we want to accomplish, but it sure helps to have some people guiding and cheering you on. This course is providing that for me and I'm grateful I took it. ~Diane Dawson Hearn
This class is jam-packed full of valuable Children's Book insider info. I have learned so much, just in 1 week. one thing for sure...I have a lot to learn!!!! I didn't submit a story board yesterday because I was being too critical of myself, which has hindered my success as a working professional artist. I gotta be fearless and just put it out there!!!! My website is jenniferbolten-mcdonough.com...I also didn't highlight this earlier since its under construction and I didn't think it was ready to be launched... anyway, its live at this point and should be complete very soon!!! Love the course Mira!!! ~Jennifer Bolten McDonough
As a novice coming back around in life to revisit a passion for art, Mira has made me feel welcome and valued in a sea of professional talent. The people she draws into her classes with her unique style are artists from all backgrounds. This by itself creates an atmosphere of creativity that is hard to pull away from! ~Jill Harp
I am learning so much. Better yet, how I look not only at art, illustrations and myself is expanding.
Thank you, ~Julie Kolb
Mira's courses are so in depth, they take me way beyond anything else. It is a lot of information to cram into the 5-6 weeks within the course timeline, but stays with you for ages afterwards. For me, I get all I can out of it and go over the material after , in my mind, and on the pages, to have it really sink in and be able to absorb it all the more. It will linger -- the knowledge and people she has with her, videos, interviews, book reviews, webinars, advice... beautiful! One other wonderful part is all of the fabulous new "friends" from all over the world we get to meet, so special to have that as opposed to a class I could drive to, to me, this makes it more true, other opinions, cultures, outlooks and a more realistic view. Thank you so much!!!!!! ~Debra Bergerson
Thank you! Thank you Mira Reisberg! My critique was so rewarding! You are truly an authentic teacher and a beautiful spirit! Lots to think about and lots to redraw! Plus I got to wave at Leda Hosier! Your generosity is boundless! ~Lenora Riegel

The Chapter Book Alchemist
The chapter book course is a must for anyone interested in writing for children. Every week you are exposed to information about the industry, the craft of writing, and professional advice and opinions. And for illustrators like me, there are videos and lessons about illustrating for chapter books, too! There are so many opportunities to have questions answered, get inspired by others, and receive critiques to make your story the best it can be. Between the webinars, the daily lessons, the suggested activities, the critique groups, and the interactive facebook page, you are getting far more for your money than you could have possibly imagined. ~ Angela Padron
This course has been more helpful than I would have imagined. I have taken writing courses on-line before and believe me there is a lot more content and interaction in this one. The promises are all true and then some. The extras as far as interviews and interaction with other professionals are well worth the money. Classmates are friendly and from all over the globe. Having only written picture books before going into chapter books was a bit scary at first, but the encouragement and guidance helped tremendously. If you have a story floating around in your head, now is the time to get it out there on paper. You never know till you try it. ~ Irene Bouchard
I have really enjoyed being a part of the chapter book course. I must admit, I had not written in over two years, but thanks to your course and the wonderful gals that are a part of my critique group, I feel MOTIVATED to write again! I'm learning so much! I LOVE your information, especially the simple to follow exercises. They have really given me guidelines and structure for my writing! ~ Joyce Evans
The Children's Book Academy Chapter Book Course is phenomenal. Not only have I learned the tools for creating a compelling chapter book, but I've also gained knowledge about the industry and insight into illustrating. The content of the course is rich, the critique groups are supportive and the teachers are responsive and helpful. I wrote an entire chapter book in the first four weeks of the course and I couldn't be more thrilled! ~ Kirsti Erekson Call

These five weeks were the best. I was so busy writing everyday that at times, I lost track of time. I woke up early to read the post and complete the exercises. Sometimes doing the same exercises two and three times. The resources, supplemental aid, webinars, information, and the supportive community of writers enabled me to hone my craft, get feedback in a timely manner, and have the experts answer my questions so I can write the book. When I finished my first book, I got down on my knees and cried. Yes, I cried. But since I had time, I wrote another book. Yes. I am so excited about this. You should definitely take this course. It is one of the best investments you will make. And the truth is, you can only get better when you learn from the best.
The Children's Book Academy course, The Chapter Book Alchemist, was fantastic! I’m a dentist by profession and, as such, a newcomer to both the publishing industry’s writing and illustrating components. I’m in the process of writing and illustrating my first book and have started writing two others! I was so pleased with the knowledge, the professionalism, and the organized content of the course. “Thank you” isn’t quite enough to express my gratitude to Mira and Hillary for all their efforts to put together such a wonderful teaching experience. ~ Dr. Helena DeLuca

The Children's Chapter Book Course is the third course I've taken with the Children's Book Academy. The first one was the Craft and Business of Illustrating Children's Picture Books, the second was the Hero's Art Journey Course. Each journey was one of joy and discovery. I not only learned how to approach the craft of both writing and illustrating in amazingly creative ways (and I thought I was already creative!), I also discovered AND rediscovered my very own voice. The teachers go the extra mile to make sure you come out of the course armed with what you need to move forward with your craft. Every morning, I looked forward to reading the day's lesson and always, on the last week of each course, I dread its coming to an end. Classmates from everywhere in the world are warm, friendly, and supportive. If you're on the fence about taking any of the courses, I'd say just dive right in--it'll be the best decision you've ever made! ~ Monette Pangan
I was recently asked which Children’s Book Academy course I’ve found most beneficial. I first signed up for Craft and Business of Writing Children's Picture Books to up my game as a picture book author. The fabulous course was so rewarding in depth and breadth that I continued with other offerings, most recently, The Chapter Book Alchemist. Designed to introduce, expand, and enrich both emerging and seasoned writers and artists, all CBA courses are current and relevant to children’s literature today. If you want to learn more about writing or illustrating children’s books for any age, I highly recommend Children’s Book Academy courses. Start with a course in your area of interest or try a course outside of your niche. Who knows, you may open a door to a new love. ~ Mary A Livingston
The Chapter Book Alchemist course from the Children's Book Academy is a MUST for anyone interested in writing in this exciting genre. Great content... great feedback... great opportunities to get your questions answered, to get an amazing critique or to just connect with other like-minded authors! And if you are someone who already knows you love writing chapter books (and maybe even knows a lot about writing them) this course gives you that "push" that you need to get in and get writing... and do it right! Don't miss it! ~ Wendi Silvano
The Children’s Book Academy rocks. I’ve taken 3 classes and each one was like a mini MFA program. The depth of the information is challenging, but the support system is amazing. I have made real friends and watched my writing and illustrating get better and better. The classes are structured so you can go at your own pace, with the Facebook group and individual groups as a huge resource and a place to get ANY question answered, no matter how basic. In addition, there are opportunities for one-on-one critiques with the very accomplished and insightful teachers and weekly webinars. I am so happy to have found these classes and will be using these materials for every writing and illustration project I embark upon from here on.
~ Laurie Young
To build anything solid, it needs to have a firm foundation. Writing any type of books is no exception. In the blueprints of Chapter Book writing, the Childrens Book Academy supplied the base. Combining the daily lessons with the weekly webinars, I now have the beginnings of a lasting structure. I did need to tear down my 'straw houses' of writing and exchange them with brick, but now I feel so much more secure. I'm beginning to understand where I need to connect and cement my 'bricks' together to make a lasting and durable story. Mira, Hillary and Mandy are masons. They brought everything and everyone together. No easy task! The fellow participants were all helpful and encouraging. I felt like we built a 'sisterhood'. (and maybe a couple of brothers?) For anyone wanting to solidify your chapter book writing, I highly recommend this class. You will walk away feeling empowered. I can't wait to start the Poetry Class next month! ~ Sally Suehler

The Chapter Book Alchemist class has been chock-full of useful information that will no doubt propel my work as a professional writer forward. But more than that, it’s given me a feeling that I’ve tapped into the right place, the right people, the right groove. It’s as if, at long last, I’ve found the golden key that unlocks the door to writing success. To experience such a generous source of support and knowledge in the field of children’s writing is truly a blessing. ~ Linda Moore Kurth

I love this video testimonial from Yuyi Morales so much, I had to include it here, just in case you missed it : ) Yuyi is also one of the brilliant contributors to The Craft and Business of Writing Picture Books, in which she shares how she went about writing her award winning book Just a Minute and has also contributed to other courses in the Picture Book Academy.
The Hero's Art Journey
Due to life circumstances, I've been in what I'll refer to as "character building mode" for the past 5 years. But I'm back! Current focus is rebuilding my portfolio and now I think I've got some new tools that are helping me to pick up the pieces and find myself again. Life is good! Mira, thank you. You are appreciated! ~ Kary
The course has been a wonderful mix of 'everything'. Life happens and art happens, and this class is a wonderful catalyst for making art happen while life goes on it's busy-body little way ~ Kirsten (Illustrator).
Mira, I love the course, and the community where we get to see each others' work on the different subject matter--very inspiring. The technique videos are great, you make things look easy and very do-able, and I know I will try more new ways of making images because of what I've experienced here.... I love the journey concept, so it feels like we're going somewhere, and we do! ~ Diane
Thank you for creating such a wonderful class, so rich with inspiration and support. I have loved the opportunity to stretch myself ... and have especially loved the topics for each week and the way you have structured the course -- it really has felt like a journey, and it's been empowering to imagine myself a "hero." ~ Maggie
Your course has been a delight in every facet. The Hero's Art Journey melded itself beautifully into all the myriad other things that life sends our way in a typical week and stood out as inspiration instead of "todo".
~ Nancy
Thanks to you, I've learned oodles about technique and come to the end of the course feeling richer in very deep and personal ways. Thank you for all your hard work, but especially thank you for your honesty and for sharing your open-hearted generosity with us.
Thank you so much Mira for all the hard work you put in, for exposing me to some great artists, for expanding my understanding of both image making and myth. ~ Elizabeth
One of the boons I received during this course was the precise opposite of what I was hoping for, but a boon just the same. One of the reasons I started this course was to have something of my own, apart from my children, who have been my priority and my "career" for the past ten years. But one of the great gifts I have received during the course is inspiring them to create art and to try new techniques. It has also been very gratifying to see their appreciation for my work and know that they are seeing me in a new light. So, what started as a way for me to establish an identity apart from my children, became a way to connect me to them even more deeply! ~ Michelle
Thank you Mira for presenting projects that allowed us to be fearless, vulnerable, emotional and expressive! I have taken the past 10 years and been creative in every field of work, but I never saw myself as an artist till recently! I enjoyed making art that reflected my personality, environment and future!... Your class has really given me that extra push.... I knew art was powerful, but to hear your encouraging words, plus share art with a class full of lovely artists was quite special! Thank you for these weeks! I appreciate you sharing your talent and kindness! I look forward to taking more classes! ~ Kimberly

Editing and Consultation Testimonials
I work with people at all levels from professional authors and illustrators who need help finessing and completing their stories or art to folks with an idea but no map or concept of how to write their story. I particularly enjoy working with people who need help editing their stories for brevity, consistency, better language choices, greater marketability, curriculum connections, age appropriateness, etc.
Even though I've been doing individual editing and art consulting for years, I've been remiss in collecting testimonials, so I'm starting now. Here are some from students whose magical stories will one day be in the hands of happy children.
"Perhaps Mira Reisberg’s greatest gift is her spectacular intuition, and the ability to help distill a persons unique voice into stories and art. Mira does this with flair and passion, while staying grounded in expertise and knowledge. Mira truly is a picture book whisperer, and a marvelous resource for shaping, revising and editing anyone's work. I highly recommend her services." ~ Marie Olofsdotter
"Editing with Mira is not the fearsome experience one expects. Somehow Mira is able to chop the word count in half (almost) and it feels like a jolly good conversation. The unnecessary words float off and are forgotten like soap bubbles." ~ Kristin Abbott
"Mira has a gift for taking a very rough idea and helping people finesse that idea into a more detailed story map. During my picture book writing consultation with Mira, we brainstormed, looked at examples of picture books involving similar content to my idea, collaborated on mapping the plot structure, and compiled a list of possible publishers. It was an incredibly productive session, and yet the time flew by, because Mira has a way of guiding people into a creative mental space, where time is timeless and the ideas flow freely. Mira is a gifted writer, illustrator, and teacher, and I would definitely meet with her again for a picture book consultation." ~ Gayle Pittman, PhD

If you were still at NIU, I'd take anything you taught!!! I learned so much in your class...the way you guided the class discussions...I always walked out of there with a head full of new ideas and possibilities! ~ Ann Pasteur
Inspirational and informative! Dr. Mira Reisberg's class will teach you how to write with an illustrator's perspective ~ a must do for anyone compelled to write children's picture books. ~ Michele Ellington
In your quiet voice, you have gotten us to move out of our lazy, procrastinating or denial stages to create. Yes, we do have a fun group, and you are definitely, a great *coach* for beginner writers such as me. You make us move whether we like it or not. Mira is full of knowledge because of her previous writing/art experiences. Thank you for sharing them with us. You are a *natural* teaching adults. You empower us to fly, Coach Mira! I love it, I love it! Thank you ever so much! ~ Sandie Sing
Mira provided logical rationale for suggested changes, based on her extensive experience as well as her own innate knack for storytelling, both in words and in pictures. To learn about the writing process is one thing; to experience it is entirely another, and Mira coached me through it in a firm but compassionate way. Although each of us participating in the class is at different stages in the development of our work, Mira has been able to address our individual needs while moving us ahead with constant encouragement. I am so glad I took this class. Not only will I have a mock up ready to submit to publishers, but I will actually come out of this having had a transformative experience. I am learning to be more open to change while knowing that nothing is a waste—it’s all a learning experience, and perhaps something that can be used at a later time, in another project. ~ Omonivie Okhade
I have always wanted to write a children’s picture book. So when Mira’s class of Writing, Illustrating and Publishing a Children’s Picture Book became available I immediately signed up. This was exactly what I needed to start and finish my children’s book. I have learned the process of writing and how revisions and critiques help your book become better than what you imagined. Mira has been a great inspiration and has allowed openness and vulnerability in her class. Her honest approach and caring of each of her students is encouraging. She brings knowledge and experience to her class that is invaluable. This has been a wonderful class that has taught me valuable skills I will continue in the future. I now have a finished picture book that I feel confident in submitting to a publisher! ~ Carrie Thebo-Frost
I was looking for a workshop that would take my picture book illustrations to the next level. Mira Reisberg's workshop fit the bill perfectly. She shared her expertise in a fun way and knew just how to present challenges to each student to promote growth in their work. It was well worth the 200 miles I drove round trip every week to take it! ~ Kristen Schwartz
When I decided to re-embark on my life-long dream of becoming a children’s book author, I immediately encountered the same old problems – Lack of industry knowledge, a manuscript that needed to reach the next level, and no idea how to move forward. Upon the advice of a friend, I checked the local SCBWI website and found Dr. Mira Reisberg’s class: Illustrating, Writing, and Publishing Children’s Picture Books. It was like a gift from heaven! I had taken classes in the past, but Dr. Reisberg’s class was different... she knows what she is talking about!... I have gone from clueless inertia to a complete package ready for submission. Not only did Mira take my manuscript to the next level, she suggested a publishing house, gave me strategic advice, and helped me craft the dreaded cover letter. With her gentle wit and generous spirit, Mira has become more than a teacher to me…. If you are serious about improving your craft and eager to make fast progress, I highly recommend any class by Dr. Mira Reisberg ~ Jeanette Banicki
Recently, I participated in Mira Reisberg’s Writing and Illustrating Children’s Book class in Sacramento. I was immediately impressed with Mira’s warmth and her genuine interest in each class members’ background and history. I loved her passion for children’s books, art and writing, which was infectious. I was especially impressed with her ability to truly “listen” then offer just the right amount of insight backed up by her many years in the field. Mira has the ability to take each person’s skills, whether as beginners, intermediates or advanced to the next level, bringing out the very best in each writer or illustrator. Her classes included discussion of all children’s book genres, including publishing tips, then onto writing, then editing, editing, editing until the work was just right.... Because of her many years in the field, she is tremendously qualified to teach others. But more than that, her truly warm and friendly personality makes knowing Mira a true privilege. ~ Diane Perruzzi
